I want to share something I admire about one of my closest friends. This woman’s home is almost covered (literally) in the Word of God. She has verses taped to her kitchen cupboards, the bathroom mirror, and painted on the walls. (Beautifully, I should add. I also greatly admire her painting skills!) These words are all around her in the places where she spends much of her time. As she lives life with her family, the inspired words are there to help guide them into a life of Godliness.

And I can’t even begin to tell you what an encouragement she has been to me. When I’m frustrated, tired, discouraged, and having those days we all have as moms of little ones, she has always been ready with gentle encouragement, straight from the Word of God. I want to be the kind of friend, wife, and mom that is able to build up and encourage my loved ones with life-giving words straight from Scripture, words that can do so much more than any wisdom I can come up with on my own, or glean from this world.
So, I’ve felt this weighing on my heart, that if I am going to raise my children to be followers of Christ, support my husband, and encourage my friends and neighbors, I need to have more of the Word of God written on my heart. Here are four reasons why:
The Bible is the Sword of the Spirit – our only weapon against the schemes of the devil.
When Paul wrote Ephesians, he likened the tools God has given us to armor the Roman soldiers wore during battle. Out of this armor, there was one weapon meant to destroy their enemies, the sword. Paul compares the sword of the Spirit to the Word of God.
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”
Here he is telling us that when we pray and speak the words of God over ourselves and one another, we speak living, life-giving words that have the power of destroying the work of the enemy!
It helps us spot lies when others try to twist the truth.
It isn’t uncommon to come across someone who flat out disagrees with what the Bible says. They refuse to believe the Gospel, and that is their choice. But how often do we recognize when a believer, maybe a pastor or another Christian leader, twists the truth in order to teach what’s convenient to them? It’s easier to make sure we believe the truth when we know the Word for ourselves.
“I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.” (Acts 20:28-29)
The word strengthens our faith when we are prone to doubt.
Have you ever experienced a time when your faith was weakened? I have. But it was knowing the love of my Heavenly Father (which I learned from His Word) That helped me stand firm in my faith when it was hard. Having the Word of God missing from my life can be kind of like wandering around lost, especially when times are hard and my faith is tested. But having words from Scripture can be like having a compass guide me out of darkness and into light.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
There are people everywhere, ready to hear the Gospel.
We are called not only to raise our children to be disciples of Christ, but to raise up disciples all over the world! No matter where we are, we need to be ready to share our faith with those whose hearts are ready to hear the good news of Christ. People have questions about Christ and the Gospel (Including our Children!) Questions don’t always wait until we have a Bible handy to look up answers. And having an informed answer can make all the difference in the world for them when it comes to making a decision to follow Christ.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
